Chapter Thirteen: Lucy
Overview
Lucy secretly revisits the house she once shared with Matt, unable to stay away from a place that still holds her marriage and old identity. As she reflects on Matt's obsession with status and the controlling wealth of his family, the chapter deepens the reader's understanding of why that life made Lucy miserable. Her private moment ends abruptly when Matt appears at her car window, forcing a direct encounter with her past.
Summary
Lucy tries to avoid driving past Hampton House, the home she once shared with Matt and where Matt now lives with his new wife. Even so, she gives in and crosses town at dusk, knowing she is making a bad decision but unable to resist seeing the place again.
Sitting in her car outside, Lucy studies the house and notices that much of it still looks the way she left it, including the flowers and custom shutters she chose. That sight pulls Lucy into memories of how she had enjoyed decorating the house even though she never truly wanted it; for Matt, the house had been a status symbol that would make them the center of attention in town.
Lucy then reflects on the financial reality behind that life. Matt had pushed aside Lucy's discomfort about accepting nearly a million dollars from his parents for the house, and Lucy remembers how their wealth came with judgment, criticism, and control, including similar digs about the brewery they financed. Her memories make clear how trapped and uneasy she felt in Matt's world despite its outward luxury.
When another car turns onto the street, Lucy panics and starts her engine, trying to avoid being seen. Before she can leave, someone knocks on her window. Lucy turns and discovers that it is Matt, ending the chapter on a sudden confrontation with the man tied to this painful part of her past.
