Chapter Thirty-Nine: Lucy
Overview
After the internet exposes Lucy as Eva Knightley, her books are immediately review-bombed, turning the reopened murder case into a direct threat to her livelihood. Lucy responds by confronting Nina, hoping to clarify what happened the night of the wedding and whether Matt's behavior points to guilt.
Nina admits she went to Matt's house intending to expose their affair, but says Matt only yelled at her and sent her away. Her continued defense of Matt, even after learning about his abuse, deepens Lucy's suspicion that guilt and self-protection are shaping what Nina is willing to see or say.
Summary
After Ben's interview airs, online readers quickly identify Lucy as Eva Knightley and flood all three of her books with reviews calling her a murderer. The public exposure immediately damages Lucy's career, and she leaves her grandmother's house furious, blaming Ben for setting this off. Still angry and emotionally depleted, Lucy drives straight to Nina's house without warning.
Nina answers the door already exhausted and says she has had a terrible day. Lucy dismisses that, tells Nina she may soon become the town's new suspected liar and adulterer, and notes that refusing another interview with Ben is probably wise. Nina is rattled and asks whether Lucy thinks Nina killed Savvy. Lucy does not answer directly and instead makes clear that Nina's affair with Matt no longer matters to her personally, though Julia's recent account of Matt's abuse should make Nina rethink what she believed about him.
Lucy presses Nina about the past. Nina admits she once slept with Colin, though not while he was dating Savvy, and adds that Savvy and Colin were never exclusive. Lucy then asks the question she came for: why Nina went to see Matt on the night of the wedding. Nina finally explains that she was drunk and intended to confront Matt outside his house so Lucy would learn about the affair. Matt had been talking as if he would leave Lucy, and Nina wanted to force that promise into the open.
Nina says that when Matt arrived, he immediately screamed at her to go home and barely let her speak. Lucy tries to learn whether Matt looked dirty or disheveled, hoping for signs that he had just been with Savvy, but Nina resists and insists Matt did not kill Savvy. Lucy challenges that certainty by pointing out that Nina never recognized Matt was abusing Lucy, and she asks why everyone was so ready to defend Matt while condemning Lucy for years. When Nina says Matt was not found covered in Savvy's blood and reminds Lucy that she defended her on the podcast, Lucy suggests Nina's defense came from guilt over sleeping with Matt. Nina angrily ends the conversation and slams the door.
