Chapter Nine: Lucy
Overview
Lucy learns how visible she is in Plumpton when a routine grocery trip turns into a public reminder of her notoriety. Her unexpectedly warm reunion with Nina contrasts with the town's hostile scrutiny, but that pressure also brings back Lucy's violent inner voice. Nina's mention of Ben confirms that the reopened investigation is shaping every interaction Lucy has in Plumpton.
Summary
Lucy goes to Plumpton's better grocery store and only realizes it is Saturday when she sees the crowded aisles. Without her Los Angeles anonymity, Lucy immediately feels the town recognizing her and staring. She rushes through the store with the list from her mother, adding buttermilk and cake for her own comfort, while privately noting how exposed and infamous she feels in her hometown.
At the checkout lines, Nina Garcia recognizes Lucy and loudly calls out to her. Lucy braces for hostility because she has not seen Nina since before Savvy died, but Nina instead greets Lucy warmly and hugs her. Lucy is unsettled by the friendliness, especially because Nina had also sounded relatively fair on Ben Owens's podcast, which makes Lucy reconsider some of her old resentment.
While Nina chats about Los Angeles, Lucy notices two women staring at her, and one woman's glare triggers the violent inner voice Lucy has been trying to ignore. Lucy briefly imagines attacking the woman, and the whisper resurfaces with murderous language. The episode shows that returning to Plumpton and being watched by people connected to Savvy's case is making the voice stronger again.
Nina asks about Lucy's mother's injury and then awkwardly brings up Ben being back in town. The mention of Ben makes Lucy anxious, and she instinctively looks around for him. Nina invites Lucy to get together and meet her children, and Lucy agrees politely, though she doubts the invitation is sincere. The encounter leaves Lucy more aware that Ben's investigation and the town's renewed attention are following her everywhere.
