Chapter Thirty-Three
Overview
Matt secretly visits Lucy at night, tries to reassert old emotional and physical control, and gives evasive answers about the night Savvy died. His insistence that Lucy stop investigating because he is “protecting” her deepens Lucy’s suspicion that he knows more than he admits. The chapter ends with a crucial new lead when Matt finally reveals that Nina Garcia was the woman at his house that night.
Summary
Late at night, Matt texts Lucy from outside her parents’ house and asks her to come down. Lucy goes because she still wants to confront him, especially after meeting Julia. Outside, Lucy immediately brings up Matt’s wife and the podcast, while noticing his bruised knuckles and his unstable mood.
Matt says Julia was always too nice for him and implies Lucy’s public comments helped him because Lucy did not directly confirm that Matt treated Lucy the same way he treated Julia. Lucy makes clear that her silence was not for Matt’s sake. Matt’s gratitude triggers Lucy’s memory of how, after Savvy’s death, Matt warned Lucy not to tell people about their violent relationship because he could use Lucy’s own acts of self-defense against her.
Without warning, Matt shoves Lucy against the car and kisses her. Lucy responds partly out of habit and partly because yielding used to feel safer than resisting, but she tries to hurt him and then firmly refuses when he asks her to come home with him. Lucy then questions Matt about the night Savvy died. Matt denies being there when Savvy died or afterward, apologizes only for abandoning Lucy after the murder, and refuses at first to identify the woman Lucy saw him arguing with in the driveway.
When Lucy tells Matt that people increasingly think he killed Savvy, Matt is shaken but still urges Lucy to stop investigating, go back to Los Angeles, and stop helping Ben. Matt insists he has always wanted to protect Lucy and claims he is still protecting her, which makes Lucy fear he is hiding something important. Pressing him again about who came to see him around one in the morning, Lucy finally gets an answer: the woman was Nina Garcia.
