Chapter Fifty: Lucy
Overview
Emmett tries to seize control of the story by telling Lucy that he witnessed her kill Savvy and that Matt helped him cover it up out of love for Lucy. But his version quickly falls apart when he cannot explain Lucy’s own head injury and reacts to details that fit Lucy’s recovered memories, confirming for Lucy that he is lying and framing her. The confrontation shifts from manipulation to open resistance when Lucy punches him.
Summary
Lucy finds herself outside the car with Emmett gripping her wrists and warning that trying to remember is dangerous. When Emmett guesses that Matt told Lucy he was at the scene, Lucy lies and says Matt did tell her, which makes Emmett start explaining himself.
Emmett claims he briefly left the wedding to let his dog out and came across Savvy’s car on the flooded side road. He says he found Lucy and Savvy arguing in the trees after he and Lucy had fooled around at the wedding, and he adds that he had also once had a fling with Savvy. According to Emmett, Savvy slapped Lucy, Lucy scratched Savvy, and then Lucy grabbed a branch, hit Savvy, panicked, and ran.
Lucy keeps pressing for details, especially about her own head injury. Emmett has no real explanation and awkwardly suggests Lucy must have hit her head while fleeing. He says Savvy was already dead, says he told Matt that Lucy killed Savvy, and claims he and Matt stayed silent because they loved Lucy and wanted to protect her, especially after she seemed not to remember anything.
As Emmett keeps talking, Lucy hears the holes in his story and his attempt to turn their past encounters into proof of mutual destiny. Lucy challenges his version of their relationship, points out that he never accounted for her injuring him, and mentions Savvy being better with knives, which visibly startles him. When Emmett patronizingly tells Lucy she is getting hysterical, Lucy stops listening and punches him in the face.
