Chapter Twenty: Lucy
Overview
Lucy confronts Ben over his questions about her mental state after Savvy’s murder, but Ben reveals that his deeper concern is how little protection Lucy received in the immediate aftermath of her trauma. The exchange pushes Lucy to see the old investigation differently and deepens her investment in Ben’s pursuit of the truth.
By the end of the chapter, Lucy encourages Ben to attend Beverly’s birthday party, agrees to a serious on-record interview, and decides to stay in Texas longer. Her choice marks a shift from reluctant cooperation to active commitment to reopening Savvy’s case.
Summary
Lucy goes to the diner and confronts Ben about the questions he asked Ivy, assuming he is trying to suggest that Lucy became unstable after her head injury and the stress of being accused of murder. Ben denies that and says he is trying to understand what happened immediately after Savvy’s death. His real concern is that Lucy, who had just survived major trauma and a life-threatening injury, was questioned right away instead of being protected.
Lucy insists that she wanted to help find Savvy’s killer and says she never told her parents that she did it, though her memory of those days is hazy. Ben points out that, if Lucy had been his child, he would not have let anyone near her after what happened. The exchange unsettles Lucy because it reframes the aftermath of the murder as a failure of care rather than simply an investigation, and her dark inner voice briefly resurfaces with violent jokes.
The conversation shifts when Ben mentions that Beverly invited him to her birthday party. Lucy is amused that Beverly did not tell her, and Ben asks whether his presence would make her uncomfortable. Lucy says he should absolutely attend, partly because Beverly will want him there and partly because Lucy expects the event to be much more awkward for Ben, especially after episode four angered Lucy’s mother.
Ben then confirms that he wants their first serious interview on Monday and mentions that Beverly told him Lucy will still be in town next week. Lucy admits Beverly is right: she is staying longer. Lucy decides to remain in Texas because she is now invested in Ben’s investigation, thinks she owes Savvy that much, and has little waiting for her at home after losing her job, her boyfriend, and her housing plans. Ben also reveals he is changing the podcast format to release real-time mini episodes, and Lucy agrees to be ready for the interview.
