After punching Emmett, Lucy does not flee. Fueled by rage and by a vivid sense of Savvy urging her on, Lucy attacks him in the road. Emmett fights back, punches Lucy, and tries to drag her off the street, but Lucy breaks free. The struggle spills into the art store, where Emmett grabs a hammer, confirming Lucy’s realization that he must have used a similar tool to kill Savvy and had returned to his truck that night to get a weapon.

Emmett chases Lucy out the back of the store and swings the hammer at her head. Lucy narrowly avoids a fatal blow, but one strike catches her on the chin. For a moment Lucy considers running, but she remembers Emmett has her keys and phone, which leaves her feeling trapped and powerless again. Instead of retreating, Lucy charges him, wrestles him to the ground, and takes the hammer away.

Lucy hits Emmett in the stomach with the hammer, and when he runs, she pursues him into a patch of trees behind the store. Her anger drives her forward, and she nearly catches him before pulling him down. Lucy then brings the hammer down on Emmett’s leg, badly injuring him. As Emmett tries to escape, the hammer is knocked loose and slides away.

Ben arrives just as the weapon stops at his feet. Emmett immediately claims Lucy has snapped and was trying to kill him. Lucy, bloody and shaken, tells Ben that Emmett killed Savvy and also tried to kill her, adding that Matt saw Emmett that night and can confirm he was there. Faced with two competing stories and the murder weapon in his hand, Ben says, “Let’s find out,” and tosses the hammer back to Lucy, marking a sharp turn in the confrontation and investigation.
