Lucy: Five Years Ago — 3
Overview
This flashback reveals that Savvy's earlier suggestion of killing Matt was not empty talk: she tells Lucy she previously killed a man named Troy after he assaulted her. The confession recasts Savvy's past, explains why she left college, and shows that her tough, joking exterior hides unresolved pain. It also raises the stakes around Matt by showing that Savvy sees lethal violence as justified against abusive men.
Summary
In a flashback, Savvy waits for Lucy to respond after offering to kill Matt. Lucy tries to dismiss the idea by saying neither of them has ever murdered anyone, but Savvy calmly corrects her. When Lucy realizes Savvy is serious, Savvy admits that she has killed someone before and says he deserved it.
Savvy explains that the man was named Troy, whom she met at a bar. According to Savvy, Troy put his hands on her, and she stabbed him repeatedly. Lucy asks whether Savvy went to the police and suggests self-defense, but Savvy says that would have been hard to argue because of how many times she stabbed him. Savvy then describes cleaning up, improvising an excuse when someone saw blood on her hands, loading Troy's body into her car, and dumping him in a swamp where it was apparently never found.
As Savvy drinks tequila, Lucy connects the confession to Savvy's sudden departure from college and realizes Savvy's family's story was false. Savvy tries to sound detached, mocking college and minimizing what happened, but Lucy can see that the experience affected her more than she admits. Lucy offers sympathy and support, and Savvy finally lets some of the emotion show. The conversation ends with Savvy insisting that Troy deserved to die and adding that Matt does too, making clear how seriously she views Matt's abuse.
