Chapter Thirty-Six: Lucy
Overview
Lucy meets Emmett for a drink and learns that Nina is still sleeping with Matt, confirming more of the damage Matt continues to cause and exposing the latest fallout from Ben’s podcast. The conversation shifts from betrayal to regret as Lucy and Emmett revisit their unresolved attraction and Lucy admits she wishes she had left Matt for Emmett long ago.
By inviting Emmett to come to Los Angeles, Lucy briefly imagines a different future for herself, suggesting real emotional movement beyond Matt and the murder investigation. That possibility is immediately threatened when a drunken Keaton Harper arrives, interrupting the moment and setting up a new complication.
Summary
After finishing work in her mother’s office, Lucy accepts Emmett’s invitation to meet for a drink. At a bar off the highway, Lucy realizes he asked her there because the latest podcast episode has caused more fallout. When Lucy carefully asks about Nina, Emmett admits Nina confessed that she is still sleeping with Matt.
Emmett explains that he had already suspected Nina was cheating, and the podcast pushed her into admitting it. He dismisses Nina’s claim that she and Matt have a special connection, saying their real bond is alcohol. Emmett says Nina had been doing better in recovery with him, but Matt pulled her back into a destructive pattern, and Emmett openly says he has always hated Matt.
The conversation turns more personal as Emmett describes feeling stuck in their hometown, having delayed leaving until his life there became hard to uproot. Lucy tells Emmett it is not too late to leave, and Emmett says he always admired Lucy for getting out, even if other people judged her for it. Their exchange revives the tension between them.
Lucy remembers a past moment when Emmett cornered her in a hallway while Matt was downstairs, offered to listen, and kissed her. Lucy had been tempted to go further, partly out of anger at Matt, but stopped herself and left. Back in the present, Lucy reaches for Emmett’s hand and admits she wishes she had gone home with him that night instead of staying with Matt.
Lucy then invites Emmett to come to Los Angeles, and when Emmett asks her not to say it unless she means it, Lucy says she does. The moment becomes openly intimate as they hold hands, but it is interrupted when Emmett notices someone behind Lucy. Lucy turns and sees a drunken Keaton Harper stumbling toward them.
