Chapter One: Lucy
Overview
Lucy loses her office job because a true crime podcast has revived the scandal of her being the prime suspect in her friend’s murder. While trying to manage the fallout by planning an apology to her boyfriend for hiding her past, Lucy is publicly escorted out and reminded that strangers care more about the accusation than the truth. The chapter establishes how thoroughly the murder case still controls Lucy’s life and reputation.
Summary
Lucy sits in her cubicle at Walter J. Brown Investment Services expecting to be fired, already convinced that a podcaster has started ruining her life. Instead of working, Lucy distracts herself by planning to buy and cook an "apology chicken" for her boyfriend because Lucy never told him that she is the prime suspect in her friend’s murder.
When Lucy’s boss, Jerry Howell, calls her into his office, Lucy immediately recognizes the setup. Jerry formally fires Lucy, claiming the company is downsizing and that Chelsea will now assist both him and another manager. Lucy understands that the real reason is the renewed attention from the true crime podcast and accepts the decision without arguing.
After the meeting, Lucy sees that a security guard is already waiting by her desk and that her fellow assistants have disappeared rather than face the awkwardness of her departure. Lucy gathers her belongings while the guard watches, and she notices Chelsea looks angry, likely because Lucy’s firing means more work for Chelsea.
The security guard escorts Lucy through the silent office to the elevator as coworkers either stare or avoid looking at her. Once they are alone, the guard drops his professional distance and asks whether Lucy really killed her friend. Lucy first says she does not know, then adds that the truth does not matter, revealing both the depth of public suspicion around her and Lucy’s bleak, detached view of her own case.
