Chapter Seventeen
Overview
Lucy’s personal life narrows further when Nathan ends their relationship by text, leaving her more isolated as the murder investigation regains public attention. She then meets Matt and tells him she is cooperating with Ben Owens, forcing a direct clash over how Savvy’s case is being reopened.
Matt initially insists Ben’s podcast is dangerous and says he refused an interview because of Lucy, but Lucy turns that resistance against him. By challenging Matt to defend himself publicly, she provokes him into agreeing to speak to Ben, a decision that could reshape the story around Savvy’s murder and Matt’s role in it.
Summary
Lucy wakes to a late-night text from Nathan saying they should break up. She jokes back with "Why????" but gets no immediate answer, then goes for a run at her mother’s gym to quiet her racing thoughts. When Matt texts asking her to meet him for lunch, Lucy considers ignoring him as she has for years, but Ben’s request, Grandma’s request, and Savvy’s memory push her to say yes.
At the Mexican restaurant, Lucy is immediately unsettled by Matt’s familiar presence and by the fact that he has already ordered her a margarita despite knowing her preferences. While sitting across from her ex-husband, Lucy receives Nathan’s follow-up texts explaining that they are going in different directions and offering to pack up her belongings. The breakup, combined with being face-to-face with Matt, leaves Lucy feeling raw and angry.
Matt asks how Lucy is handling being back in town and whether she is listening to Ben Owens’s podcast. Lucy tells Matt that she has not only been listening but is also in contact with Ben and has agreed to help him by doing an interview. Matt is shocked and immediately warns Lucy that Ben is not on her side, but Lucy replies that no one is on her side and that Ben at least does not seem loyal to anyone else either.
When Lucy mentions that Ben said Matt had refused an interview, Matt admits he said no because of Lucy and expects appreciation for that choice. Lucy does not reward his protectiveness; instead, she turns the conversation toward Matt’s own interests. Since Kyle has already told the public that Matt was cheating, Lucy argues that Matt should speak for himself and deny it if he wants his version heard. Provoked and determined to prove his point, Matt angrily agrees to let Ben call him and says he will do the interview.
