Chapter Eleven: Lucy
Overview
Lucy learns that Grandma Beverly deliberately engineered the diner encounter with Ben Owens because she believes he is Lucy’s best chance to uncover what happened to Savannah and possibly change public opinion. Lucy resists because Ben’s investigation could expose dangerous truths, not just clear her. The chapter closes with a new lead that shifts suspicion toward Colin Dunn: he did not go straight home after the wedding.
Summary
Lucy returns to Grandma Beverly’s house after the diner and immediately confronts Beverly for sending her there knowing Ben Owens would be waiting. Beverly does not deny it. She admits that the party was arranged to get Lucy back to town and that she intentionally put Lucy in Ben’s path.
As Lucy eats the takeout she brought, Beverly jokes about Ben’s looks, but then explains that her real reason is more serious. Beverly says Ben seems direct and genuinely interested in finding out who killed Savannah, rather than simply blaming Lucy again. Lucy avoids answering because the idea of Ben uncovering the truth frightens her as much as it tempts her.
Beverly then reveals that she already told Ben she would persuade Lucy to let him interview her. Lucy resists and insults Ben, but Beverly argues that Ben’s gender, confidence, and public platform give him influence that Lucy does not have. Beverly believes that if Ben says Lucy may be innocent, other people will finally listen.
Lucy questions why Ben would succeed when the Harpers already hired private investigators who found nothing. Beverly says Ben plans to uncover information no one else found and insists he has already made progress. The chapter ends with Beverly revealing Ben’s first significant lead: Colin Dunn did not go straight home after the wedding.
