Chapter Forty-Five: Lucy

Overview

Lucy reaches a breaking point after meeting with Matt and finally loses hope that he killed Savvy. Matt’s lie and Lucy’s recovered image of his shocked face convince her that she may have been the one who struck the fatal blow, possibly while trying to stop Savvy from going after Matt.

Unable to separate memory from fear, Lucy chooses retreat over answers: she books a flight back to Los Angeles and shuts Ben down when he tries to keep investigating with her. The chapter marks a major shift from suspecting Matt to fearing her own guilt.

Summary

After leaving Matt, Lucy returns to her parents’ house and barely sleeps. She is tormented by Savvy’s voice and by a fragment of memory—“She tried to—”—that makes Lucy wonder whether Savvy attacked her first, whether Lucy struck back with the branch, and whether Savvy’s death may have been accidental rather than planned.

Lucy wakes nauseated, vomits, and receives a text from Ben asking if she wants to revisit the woods near the Byrd estate. Instead of agreeing, Lucy books a flight back to Los Angeles. As she imagines Savvy standing in her room in the bloody pink dress, Lucy admits that part of her had still hoped Matt killed Savvy, but Matt’s shocked expression from that night now feels too real. Because of that memory and because Matt lied, Lucy concludes that Matt probably did not kill Savvy.

That conclusion turns Lucy’s fear inward. Lucy remembers that she was the one holding the bloody branch and talking about murder, probably because of Matt’s abuse. She considers a new possibility: Savvy may have gone after Matt, and Lucy may have stopped Savvy and killed her by accident. Even though Lucy cannot fully believe she would choose Savvy’s death over Matt’s, she decides she would rather live with uncertainty than confirm that she murdered her best friend.

Lucy also decides she cannot completely cut off Ben, because he already suspects her and silence might make her look more guilty. While showering, Lucy is overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts in Savvy’s voice about enjoying killing Troy and about snapping again. The panic reminds Lucy why she stopped trying to recover her memory in the first place: she can no longer tell what is real and what is fear.

Later, Lucy goes to Ben’s hotel room and tells him she is leaving in two days. Ben presses her for a reason and asks what she remembered, but Lucy refuses to explain. She says she needs to return to Los Angeles and move out of her ex-boyfriend’s apartment, adding bitterly that he does not want to date a murderer. When Ben asks to keep interviewing her, Lucy tells him to say whatever he wants about her and walks out, pulling away from both Ben and the investigation.
