Lucy drives downtown to visit Emmett Chapman at his art store. On the way in, Lucy reflects on how she avoided him after Savvy died, telling herself she was too damaged and dangerous to let him get close. Lucy also thinks about their long history, his artwork, and the life she might have had if she had chosen differently years earlier.

Before Lucy enters the store, she sees Keaton Harper, Savvy’s older brother, outside a nearby restaurant with other men. Keaton recognizes Lucy immediately and glares at her, making Lucy want to flee. Emmett sees Lucy through the window, lets her in despite the store being closed, and Lucy notices how much he has changed from the awkward boy she once knew.

Inside, Lucy apologizes for never returning Emmett’s calls after Savvy’s death. Emmett accepts the explanation and suggests that Lucy was traumatized, showing her more sympathy than hostility. Their tentative reconnection is cut short when Keaton pounds angrily on the window and demands to know what Emmett is doing with Lucy there.

Lucy prepares to leave because Keaton’s anger makes the situation feel unsafe. Emmett lightly stops her, looks outside, and confirms Keaton has gone back into the restaurant. As Lucy leaves, Emmett says that Nina has been meaning to invite Lucy to dinner and reveals that he and Nina have been dating for a few months. Lucy agrees to dinner but leaves disappointed, realizing Emmett is no longer an unrealized possibility.
