Chapter Fifty-Three: Lucy
Overview
Outside the hospital, Lucy confronts Matt and her parents and forces Matt to admit why he believed Emmett’s accusation the night Savvy died. Lucy clarifies that Savvy was trying to save her, not harm her, and accuses her family of lying to police and hiding evidence to protect themselves. The chapter cements Lucy’s break from the people who failed her and reframes Savvy as the one person who truly stood by her.
Summary
Lucy leaves the hospital bruised and stitched up to find Matt waiting outside with her parents nearby. Ben has already gone, but Lucy realizes he ignored her request not to contact anyone. Matt reacts with fury and says he wants to kill Emmett, confirming that the truth about Emmett is now out in the open.
Lucy immediately presses Matt about what he saw on the night Savvy died. Matt admits that Lucy ran past him first, then Emmett appeared moments later crying and claiming that Lucy had killed Savvy. Matt says Lucy was covered in blood and muttering about killing and that Savvy “deserved it,” so he believed Emmett’s version.
Lucy corrects him, explaining that the unfinished thought was that Savvy had tried to save her and that Emmett killed Savvy. Lucy’s mother moves to comfort her, but Lucy refuses the gesture and instead tells her family that the police want to question them. Her father is shocked, and Lucy makes clear that she knows they lied to investigators and hid evidence.
When Matt insists that he and Lucy’s parents were trying to protect her, Lucy rejects that excuse. Lucy argues that Matt was really protecting himself because the truth would have exposed his abuse and other damaging facts. She ends the confrontation by declaring that Savvy was the only person who ever truly protected her, sharpening the emotional divide between Lucy and her family while reaffirming Savvy’s final act.
