Chapter Twenty-One: Lucy
Overview
Beverly’s birthday party becomes a public disaster when Lucy aligns herself with Ben’s investigation and Kathleen is forced to admit that Colin was her alibi on the night Savannah died. The chapter deepens the split between Lucy and her parents, especially after Don tries to stop Ben from interviewing her. Most importantly, Lucy realizes that the voice haunting her is Savvy’s, signaling that a repressed memory may finally expose what really happened.
Summary
Lucy expects her mother to cancel Beverly’s birthday party after Ben’s latest mini-episode, but Kathleen acts as if nothing happened and throws herself into the preparations. At the restaurant, Lucy watches relatives arrive and notices their discomfort around her. The biggest surprise comes when Ben appears with a gift, and Beverly happily reveals that she invited him herself, forcing Kathleen to swallow her outrage in front of everyone.
During dinner, Lucy sits between Beverly and Ben because Beverly insists on it. The table conversation turns to Ben’s podcasting career and past case, and Lucy notices both the family’s fascination with him and her own sharpened awareness of him. When Ashley pushes Lucy about why she has never publicly told her side, Lucy announces that she will be giving Ben an interview, which immediately alarms both of her parents.
As the discussion shifts toward truth and the investigation, Lucy’s intrusive inner voice grows louder, making her increasingly uneasy. Then Keith openly attacks Ben for the podcast’s claims about Kathleen and Colin and for suggesting Kathleen might be linked to Savannah’s death. Pressured and furious, Kathleen abruptly confesses to the whole table that she did have sex with Colin in her car on the wedding night and declares that Colin is her alibi, stunning the family and ending the confrontation.
After the party dissolves in embarrassed silence, Beverly tells Lucy that the chaos made the birthday better, not worse. Lucy then overhears Don privately urging Ben not to interview Lucy, insisting that he and Kathleen were only ever protecting her. Ben pushes back, arguing that Lucy has never actually been allowed to tell her own story directly.
When they are alone, Lucy tells Ben that she wants the truth too, then revises herself and says she wants to figure out what happened to Savannah. After Ben leaves, Lucy finally recognizes that the voice in her head has always been Savvy’s voice. As that realization lands, a buried memory begins to return with sudden, frightening clarity.
