At home, Lucy feels the atmosphere turn immediately hostile when her mother starts listening to Ben Owens's fourth podcast episode. From upstairs, Lucy hears her mother furiously calling people around town and complaining that Ben is being irresponsible and outrageous. Lucy also hears her mother say that Ben interviewed her months earlier, took all the information she offered, and then chose not to air any of it.

Wanting to avoid the fallout and fearing her mother may blame her, Lucy grabs her purse and slips out of the house. On her way to the car, she runs into her father coming up the walk. When Lucy hurriedly says she is going to her grandmother's, the moment echoes her childhood habit of escaping before family conflict became unbearable.

Lucy’s father stops her and says that if Lucy has remembered something, she can still talk to him. His sadness unsettles Lucy, but his words trigger a memory from five years earlier, when he told her that if she remembered anything about Savvy, she could tell only him and that whatever it was would be okay. Remembering his desperation, Lucy concludes that he believed she killed Savvy then and likely still does now. Instead of answering honestly, Lucy deflects with a dark joke and leaves.
