Lucy: Five Years Ago — 4
Overview
This flashback shows Lucy trapped in Matt's abusive cycle as he apologizes, tries to seduce her, and then gaslights her about trying to drown her. Savvy's interruption makes clear that Savvy viewed Matt as a serious danger and was genuinely prepared to have him killed. When Lucy refuses Matt and calls out his cheating, his anger flares, confirming how quickly he turns threatening when he loses control.
Summary
Five years earlier at the wedding reception, Matt finds Lucy alone in the hallway outside the ballroom and apologizes for what happened earlier. Even though Lucy knows Matt hits her and cheats on her, she still lets herself respond to him physically, which shows how tightly she is caught in the cycle of abuse, desire, and self-blame.
Matt tries to turn the encounter into sex by reminding Lucy that they once had sex in the bathroom at another wedding there. Before anything happens, Savvy comes out of the bathroom with several women, including Nina, and sees them together. When Lucy reaches for Savvy, Savvy jerks away and says Matt does not deserve Lucy and that Lucy knows what he really deserves, revealing how strongly Savvy wants Matt dead.
After Savvy leaves, Lucy thinks that despite all her anger, she does not believe she can actually kill Matt and does not want him to turn her into a murderer. Matt keeps pushing for sex, but Lucy finally refuses and says she will not sleep with him only hours after he tried to drown her in the bathtub. Matt immediately denies that he tried to drown her, and Lucy feels the familiar effect of his gaslighting as he makes her question her own memory.
Lucy resists that doubt and shoves back verbally. When Matt threatens that he can always find another woman, Lucy tells him to do it because he is already sleeping with half the town. She then says plenty of men at the reception would want her too, which makes Matt openly furious. He can only conceal that rage when other guests come through the door; then he bumps Lucy hard as he leaves, and an unseen familiar voice asks whether Lucy is okay.
