Chapter Twenty-Eight: Lucy
Overview
After sleeping with Ben, Lucy slips out before dawn and spends the morning regretting both the sex and the lack of boundaries between suspect and podcaster. Ben’s follow-up call shows that their relationship has shifted, but it also re-centers the investigation when he reveals a bonus episode featuring Matt material and an interview with Maya Harper.
The chapter matters because Lucy and Ben’s personal entanglement now affects the case directly, and Maya’s reentry promises information that could reopen painful parts of Savvy’s murder. Lucy’s strong reaction shows that Maya remains emotionally significant and potentially dangerous to ignore.
Summary
Lucy wakes before sunrise in Ben’s bed after they have had sex twice. As she gets dressed, she has her familiar intrusive thought about how easy it would be to kill a sleeping man, and Savvy’s voice comments on it. Lucy throws away her ripped underwear, realizes she left her car at the bar, and walks there in the heat while criticizing her own choices, especially sleeping with Ben without a condom.
On the walk and drive home, Lucy reflects that she cannot blame alcohol because she was not drunk enough to excuse what happened. She worries more about the recklessness and awkward implications than about pregnancy, since she has an IUD, and she frames the entire encounter as another bad decision tied to Ben’s podcast and her role in it.
Back at her mother’s house, Lucy slips inside quietly, changes clothes, sees a text from Ben, and ignores it before going back to sleep. When she wakes later, her headache is gone, but she finds more increasingly anxious texts from Ben asking whether she got home safely.
Lucy finally replies, and Ben immediately calls. Their conversation is flirtatious but uneasy: Ben complains that Lucy left without waking him, Lucy teases him for sleeping with the murder suspect from his own podcast, and they both acknowledge that neither of them is known for good decisions. Lucy also directly raises the fact that they did not use a condom, and Ben apologizes.
Ben then shifts to the real reason for calling. He says he is assembling a bonus episode using the material he recorded with Matt and wants Lucy to hear it first and veto it if she wants. When Lucy asks why, Ben explains that the episode includes an interview with Maya Harper. The mention of Savvy’s younger sister immediately unsettles Lucy, and she tells Ben to send her the interview.
