Chapter 48
Overview
Randy shows Sydney the engagement ring he bought for Gretchen and asks for her honest opinion. Although Sydney still believes Gretchen could do better, Randy’s obvious love and sincerity persuade her not to stand in their way. The chapter ends with a significant moral choice: Sydney decides to keep quiet about Randy’s lack of an alibi for Bonnie’s murder.
Summary
Randy arrives with the secret he wanted to show Sydney: an engagement ring he bought for Gretchen the day before. Sydney feels sick when she realizes he plans to propose, because she has never thought Randy was good enough for her best friend.
Randy nervously asks whether Gretchen will like the ring, especially because the diamond is small. Sydney admits the stone is a bit small, and Randy explains that he already stretched himself financially, spending six months of salary because he wanted Gretchen to have the best he could afford.
When Sydney suggests that maybe Randy should wait a few years if money is tight, Randy makes his motive clear. He says he loves Gretchen, believes she is the best person he has ever met, and wants to spend his life making her happy. His sincerity softens Sydney, even though she still has reservations about him.
After deciding she would be wrong to interfere with a relationship that clearly matters to both of them, Sydney tells Randy that Gretchen will love the ring. Randy brightens, asks for advice about proposing, and even wonders if using index cards would seem foolish. Sydney reassures him that Gretchen is likely to say yes no matter what.
By the end of the conversation, Sydney accepts that Randy truly loves Gretchen and wants to give her the happiness she deserves. Because of that realization, Sydney decides she can never tell anyone that Randy does not have an alibi for the night Bonnie was murdered.
