Chapter 18
Overview
At Bonnie’s funeral, Sydney is disturbed by the possible sight of Kevin in the church, which sharpens her fear that danger is still close. As the service unfolds, the reality of Bonnie’s murder crashes down on her, turning grief into panic. The chapter deepens Sydney’s trauma and ends with her determined not to become another victim.
Summary
At Bonnie’s funeral, Sydney is jolted to see a man she thinks might be Kevin sitting in the back of the dark church. Because Bonnie had felt threatened by Kevin and Jake warned Sydney to watch for suspicious behavior, his presence immediately alarms her, although Sydney cannot be sure she has identified him correctly from across the nave.
Sydney’s attention is then pulled to the start of the service as the pallbearers bring in Bonnie’s oak coffin. She recognizes Bonnie’s brother among them and sees how close he is to breaking down. The casket is closed because of the violence done to Bonnie, and Sydney reflects that Bonnie would have preferred that, even though Sydney wishes she could have seen her one last time and known she was prepared in ways Bonnie would have wanted.
As the priest speaks, Sydney cannot stop staring at the coffin and struggling to accept that Bonnie is really dead. The physical reality of Bonnie’s body in the box makes the loss feel impossible and permanent in a way Sydney can barely process.
Sydney’s thoughts turn to everything Bonnie wanted from life but will never have: travel in Latin America, a beach house, learning guitar, and most of all finding lasting love. Sydney understands that Bonnie went on so many dates not because she enjoyed the process, but because she was genuinely searching for a partner to share her life with.
The finality of Bonnie’s death overwhelms Sydney and sends her into a near panic attack. Gretchen notices, quietly comforts her by rubbing her back, and helps her steady her breathing. Even after Sydney regains some control, she is left with a fierce internal vow that Bonnie’s fate will not become her own.
