Epilogue
Overview
One month after Gretchen and Tom disappear, Sydney begins rebuilding her life and decides to rekindle her relationship with Jake, whose steady presence has protected and comforted her. That fragile sense of closure is shattered when Sydney receives a note and a lock of hair from Tom revealing that Kevin is dead, proving Tom is still dangerous and still watching her. Sydney's choice to throw the evidence away shows her desire to move forward even as the threat from the past remains unresolved.
Summary
One month later, Sydney returns home with groceries and reflects on surviving Gretchen Driscoll's poisoning and the police response at Randall Muncy's building. Gretchen and Tom Brewer escaped through the back and have remained missing despite a major manhunt involving local police and the FBI. In the aftermath, Jake has made himself a constant presence in Sydney's life, claiming he needs to protect her in case the fugitives return.
Jake calls as Sydney enters her building and asks if she has plans that night. Their conversation reveals that they have spent nearly every evening together since the attack, with Jake often bringing dinner and watching over her. When Sydney says she no longer needs such intense protection, Jake sounds hurt, but Sydney immediately clarifies that she still wants him to come over because she enjoys being with him.
Sydney realizes she wants to give Jake another chance, believing the ordeal helped both of them see what they lost when their relationship ended. She looks forward to his visit and imagines a real future with him, concluding that Jake, not Tom, may be the right partner for her. This marks Sydney's decision to move toward normal life and renewed romance after trauma.
Before going upstairs, Sydney checks her mailbox and finds an unmarked envelope with her name handwritten on it. Inside is a lock of dirty blond hair tied with a red ribbon and a torn note in the same handwriting. The note reads that Kevin will not bother Sydney anymore and is signed by Tom, implying that Tom has killed Kevin despite promising that no one else would die.
Sydney understands that Tom and likely Gretchen are not as far removed from her life as she hoped. She briefly thinks she should preserve the letter for Jake and for justice, since Kevin's death would still be murder. Instead, after hesitating, Sydney puts the hair and note back in the envelope, throws it in the trash, and goes upstairs to prepare for dinner with Jake.
