Chapter 47
Overview
Sydney’s attempt to return to normal is disrupted when a supposed new client turns out to be Kevin using another false identity. Kevin apologizes but then implies he has been watching her through her window, deepening Sydney’s fear that he is stalking her. Before she can decide whether to involve Jake or the police, Randy arrives with a secret to show her, sharpening both her suspicion of him and the chapter’s tension.
Summary
The next morning, Sydney forces herself to keep a scheduled Zoom meeting with a new client even though she is exhausted and still shaken by Bonnie’s murder. While preparing for the call, Sydney thinks again about Randy’s missing alibi for the night Bonnie died, but she decides not to tell the police or Jake because she does not truly believe Randy is a killer and because she does not want to ruin his life or hurt Gretchen.
When the call begins, Sydney discovers that the supposed client, Orson Finley, is actually Kevin using another name. Kevin says he contacted Sydney this way because she keeps refusing to speak to him. He apologizes for becoming aggressive on their date, claims he is ashamed of his behavior, and asks for another chance, but Sydney firmly refuses because she is seeing someone else and has no intention of dating a man who attacked her.
As Kevin keeps pleading, he says that it is wrong that he only gets to see Sydney through a window. That comment alarms Sydney, because it suggests Kevin may have been watching her apartment. She immediately ends the call, rushes to the window, and studies the surrounding buildings, realizing that many windows could look into her home. The possibility that Kevin has been spying on her leaves her frightened, but she still avoids calling Jake because she knows that would likely force her to explain Randy’s lack of an alibi.
Sydney lowers her blinds to block anyone’s view inside, but then her doorbell rings. Already terrified, she fears Kevin may have come to her apartment and is horrified to realize she forgot to lock the dead bolt. Ready to call the police, Sydney checks the peephole and discovers the visitor is Randy instead. Although Randy’s unexplained movements on the night of Bonnie’s murder still trouble her, she lets him inside. Randy, visibly nervous, tells Sydney he needs to show her something and makes her promise not to tell anyone; when he reaches into his pocket, Sydney reacts with dread, and the chapter ends before the reveal.
