Chapter 7
Overview
After yoga, Sydney meets Bonnie and Gretchen for coffee and feels her own loneliness more sharply as Bonnie talks about a promising new relationship and Gretchen speaks happily about Randy. That mood pushes Sydney to revisit the frightening but thrilling memory of the stranger who rescued her from Kevin.
When Sydney tells her friends the full story, they frame the encounter as a missed connection worth pursuing and urge her to search for him through Cynch. The chapter shifts Sydney from passive recovery after the attack to an active decision that could redirect her romantic life.
Summary
After Arlene’s crowded yoga class ends, Sydney rolls up her mat beside her friends Gretchen and Bonnie. The three women go to the coffee shop next door, where Gretchen offers to pay because she missed Sydney’s planned rescue call during Sydney’s disastrous date the night before. Their conversation turns to Bonnie’s love life, and Bonnie admits she is seeing a very attractive doctor she genuinely likes, which makes Sydney more aware of her own lack of romantic success.
At the table, Gretchen enthusiastically asks for details about Bonnie’s new man, while Bonnie insists he is different from the many bad dates she has endured. Gretchen then invites both friends to the opening of her new museum exhibit. As the conversation continues, Sydney silently compares her friends’ relationships and prospects with her own life, thinking about how long she has wanted marriage, children, and a stable partner without getting any closer to that future.
Sydney’s thoughts drift from her failed relationship with Jake to the mysterious man who rescued her from Kevin outside her building. The memory of that brief encounter affects Sydney more strongly than she expects, and it makes her wonder whether she could somehow find him again. Because she is still fixated on that moment, Sydney abruptly asks her friends how someone might track down a missed connection.
Sydney then tells Gretchen and Bonnie the full story of her awful date, Kevin’s aggression, and the stranger’s intervention. Gretchen reacts with romantic excitement, while Bonnie and Gretchen both encourage Sydney to look for the man anyway despite Sydney’s embarrassment over her injured forehead. They suggest several options, including Craigslist, social media, and especially Cynch, reasoning that if the man is single and local, he may have a profile there.
By the end of the conversation, Sydney is persuaded by the fact that both friends agree, which is unusual for them. Although Sydney briefly worries that pursuing a random man from the neighborhood could be a bad idea, she pushes that doubt aside because he saved her. The chapter ends with Sydney deciding she is going to try to find the mystery man.
