Chapter 28
Overview
Sydney’s growing happiness about Tom is undercut by two renewed threats: Kevin appears outside her yoga studio again, strengthening her fear that he is stalking her, and Jake reveals that Bonnie’s murder matches a third killing, confirming a serial killer. Even as the danger around her escalates, Sydney moves deeper into trust and intimacy with Tom and dismisses Jake’s cautions. The chapter raises the stakes by showing that Sydney is both more vulnerable and less guarded than before.
Summary
Sydney goes to yoga with Gretchen for the first time in a month, after both women had avoided class following Bonnie’s murder. During and after class, Sydney admits she is very excited about her third date with Tom and is already imagining a future with him, even while telling herself it is too soon. Gretchen teases her about Tom being “the One,” and Sydney’s feelings make clear that she is falling for him quickly.
After class, Arlene offers chocolate samples and expresses sympathy about Bonnie’s death, adding that she feels Bonnie’s spirit in the studio. Sydney does not find that comforting and remains frustrated that Bonnie’s killer has not been caught. As Sydney and Gretchen leave, Sydney spots Kevin outside the glass door of the studio, watching her. Because Kevin has appeared near her multiple times since their disastrous date, Sydney now believes he may be following her.
When Kevin makes eye contact and waves, Sydney refuses to engage and pulls Gretchen out of sight. Sydney explains that Kevin is the man she once went out with and fears he is stalking her, but she also admits she does not know enough about him to take much action beyond reporting him to Cynch and mentioning him to Detective Jake Sousa. Gretchen urges her to do something, but Sydney minimizes the danger. The conversation then shifts when Gretchen excitedly announces that she is moving in with Randy, which means she will be leaving her apartment and becoming Sydney’s neighbor.
Arlene helps Sydney leave through a back exit so she can avoid Kevin. While walking home to get ready for her date with Tom, Sydney receives a call from Jake and first hopes he has solved Bonnie’s murder. Instead, Jake tells her investigators have found another victim from about three years earlier with the same mutilation pattern and matching DNA evidence, confirming that Bonnie’s death is part of a serial-killer case. The police are keeping the information from the press to avoid public panic, but the news terrifies Sydney.
Because the threat has escalated, Jake checks on Sydney, tells her to keep locking her doors, and tries to ensure she is staying off Cynch. He then awkwardly offers to come over with Chinese food and keep her company, though he denies it is a date. Sydney turns him down because she already has plans with Tom. Jake warns her to be careful and says he can run a background check if she ever has concerns about the man she is seeing, but Sydney ends the call reassured by Jake’s protectiveness and convinced that Tom is the person who will keep her safe.
