Sydney becomes so dizzy she collapses just as Gretchen lets Tom into the apartment. Tom immediately asks Gretchen, calling her Daisy, what she did to Sydney. Gretchen admits she put oleander in the wine, enough to make Sydney and Randy extremely drowsy without showing up on a routine autopsy. Sydney realizes Randy is unconscious because he drank more than she did, and she begins to understand that Gretchen, not Randy, has been controlling the situation.

As Sydney listens from the floor, Tom and Gretchen reveal their shared past. Gretchen explains that Daisy was her childhood nickname, and Tom angrily says she promised to leave him alone after "the last one." Gretchen admits she joined Bonnie's yoga class and moved in with Randy so she could watch Tom's life and any woman he cared about. Tom says he has been too afraid to pursue a real relationship because every serious connection puts women in danger and risks exposing him to the police.

Gretchen tells Tom she has always wanted him and only used Randy as a prop. When Tom points out that she is engaged to Randy, Gretchen claims she hates him and proves it by grabbing the knife near the cake box and stabbing Randy three times while he is helpless. Tom is horrified and calls Randy innocent, but Gretchen dismisses that and says Randy had invaded female tenants' apartments and gone through their underwear. Sydney believes Randy was creepy, but she also knows he did not deserve to die.

Gretchen then explains her larger plan. She says she planted locks of women's hair in Randy's toilet tank so Randy will be blamed for the earlier murders and for Bonnie's death, and she intends Sydney to become Randy's final victim before Gretchen kills Randy in supposed self-defense. Sydney understands that Gretchen fully intends to murder her to eliminate the last witness.

Tom begs Gretchen to get help and go to the police with him, but Gretchen attacks his moral posture. She tells Sydney that Tom is drawn to her because Sydney bleeds easily and says Tom has always enjoyed watching women bleed, citing Sydney's nosebleed and cut finger. Sydney is shaken because Tom never clearly denies it, and Gretchen tries to pull him back to her by claiming they belong together and could enjoy Sydney's suffering side by side. The chapter ends with Sydney trapped, drugged, and terrified as Gretchen presses Tom to accept their bond.
