Chapter 30
Overview
After Alison and her dog interrupt Tom and Slug while they are hiding Tom's father's corpse in a trunk, Tom realizes they may already have a witness. Rufus's reaction to the trunk deepens their fear that Alison will later connect the suspicious scene to the father's disappearance. Because discovery now feels more likely, Slug abandons a quick disposal plan and decides they must bury the body instead.
Summary
Tom immediately realizes that Alison may have seen him and Slug stuffing Tom's dead father into Slug's trunk. He tries to reassure himself that the darkness may have hidden what they were doing, but he also knows the porch lights gave Alison a clearer view and that she could connect the scene to any future disappearance.
To test what Alison noticed, Tom walks over and speaks to her while she is out with her dog, Rufus. Alison answers casually, but Rufus becomes agitated, pulls past Tom, and runs toward the Oldsmobile. When the dog begins barking directly at the trunk, Alison remarks that Rufus only behaves that way around raw meat.
Frozen, Tom cannot answer, so Slug quickly lies that he has hamburger meat and hot dogs in the trunk for a family barbecue. Alison accepts the explanation, but then reminds Tom to talk to Daisy soon. After Tom gives her a tense promise, Alison finally pulls Rufus away and continues her walk.
Once Alison is out of earshot, Slug bluntly says she must have seen enough to become dangerous, especially after Tom's father is reported missing. Tom resists that conclusion, but Slug insists Alison is now a loose end because the dog drew attention to the trunk and she knows something suspicious happened.
Tom pushes aside the problem of Alison because they still must dispose of the body. Slug changes his plan from dumping the corpse in the river to burying it so it will not be found quickly. Tom agrees, and Slug reveals he already brought shovels, showing he came prepared for burial.
