Overview
This flashback reveals the immediate aftermath of Tom killing his abusive father, a moment that turns Tom from trapped victim into active killer. Slug proves willing and disturbingly capable of helping Tom hide the crime, which shows how Tom's past became entangled in secrecy and cover-up. The chapter ends with Alison witnessing the body disposal, creating a dangerous new source of leverage and future conflict.
Summary
In this flashback, Tom describes killing his abusive father by cutting his throat with a kitchen knife, using knowledge he learned from surgical textbooks. Tom first feels relief because his father will never beat Tom's mother or terrorize the family again, but that relief quickly turns into panic when Tom realizes he has committed an obvious murder and could go to prison for life.
Tom washes the blood from his hands enough to use his phone and decides there is only one person he can call: his best friend, Slug. Tom tells Slug only that he has done something very bad, and Slug agrees to borrow his parents' car and come over immediately. While waiting, Tom remains overwhelmed by the amount of blood and by the impossibility of handling the situation alone.
When Slug arrives and sees Tom's father's body, Slug does not recoil or run. Instead, Slug matter-of-factly concludes that Tom has finally killed his father and immediately starts planning the cover-up. Slug says the bloodstained rug cannot be saved, suggests wrapping the body in it, and asks for six garbage bags to line his trunk. Tom is disturbed by how calm and efficient Slug is, but Tom follows Slug's lead, changes out of his bloody clothes, notices and ignores a text from Daisy, and returns downstairs.
By the time Tom comes back, Slug has rolled the body inside the rug and positioned the car for a quick transfer through the garage. Tom and Slug struggle together to carry Tom's father's body to the trunk, but they manage to force it inside and slam it shut. Tom is already dreading how they will dispose of the corpse when he looks up and sees Alison standing on the sidewalk, watching everything they have done.
