In a flashback, Tom arrives at school and immediately sees two police cars outside. Already tense from the recent injury his father caused with a fire poker, Tom fears the police presence means trouble. He goes to Slug for information, expecting Slug to know what happened.

Slug tells Tom that Brandi Healey has been found dead, not missing, after her body was discovered buried in the woods when a dog dug it up. Slug adds that he overheard Brandi may have been tortured before she was killed. The news horrifies Tom because Brandi is someone he knew, and the discovery makes the danger feel immediate.

When Slug brings up that Tom used to tutor Brandi, Tom tries to minimize the connection. Slug then makes a crude remark about Brandi’s looks, and Tom reacts angrily, telling Slug not to talk about her that way. Tom’s sharp response shows both his distress over Brandi’s death and his fear that attention may fall on him.

Daisy runs to Tom in tears and throws herself into his arms, grieving over what happened to Brandi. Alison follows behind and watches Tom closely, which unsettles him. Daisy says her father is determined to find Brandi’s killer, and Alison reminds everyone that Daisy’s father believes the murderer may be a student at their school.

Daisy explains that the police will be questioning students, and Tom feels sick at the thought of being interrogated. He worries that police scrutiny could lead directly to him. When Daisy asks Tom to walk her home after school, Tom agrees to cancel his tutoring session, all while thinking he might be taken away in handcuffs before the day is over.
