Chapter 46
Overview
Chief Driscoll’s visit turns official suspicion toward Tom, as he raises rumors about Tom’s conflicts with Alison and Brandi and asks the family to come to the station. The situation escalates when he spots blood on the sofa, forcing Luann to lie, deny him a sample, and risk a warrant.
The chapter deepens the crisis by showing that Luann understands enough to protect Tom rather than turn him in. It also marks a personal loss for Tom, who realizes his future with Daisy is likely finished even before the law catches up to him.
Summary
Chief Driscoll comes to Tom’s house and asks to speak with him about Alison Danzinger’s murder. Tom is frightened that the visit may expose him, but he tries to reassure himself that the chief is only fishing for information. Luann initially blocks the doorway, then reluctantly lets Chief Driscoll into the living room and stays beside Tom while he is questioned.
During the interview, Chief Driscoll says other students reported that Alison disliked Tom dating Daisy and that there are troubling rumors involving both Alison and Brandi. Tom confirms his earlier claim that he was home all night, and Luann backs him up. When Chief Driscoll asks for Tom’s father, Luann lies and says her husband is still at work, then resists the chief’s request that the whole family come to the station to give a formal statement.
The conversation makes clear that Chief Driscoll now seriously suspects Tom. Luann insists Tom is a good boy and reminds the chief that he once trusted Tom enough to let Daisy date him, but Chief Driscoll does not reassure her. Tom realizes that, regardless of whether he is arrested, his relationship with Daisy is effectively over.
As Chief Driscoll is leaving, he notices a dried reddish stain on the sofa. Tom immediately recognizes it as blood left from when he slit his father’s throat and failed to clean every trace. Luann quickly claims the stain is paint from an art project, but Chief Driscoll asks to take a sample.
Luann refuses consent and asks whether he needs a warrant. Chief Driscoll says he will get one if necessary, then leaves. After locking the door, Luann is visibly shaken, tells Tom to go to his room because she needs to be alone, and later Tom sees her crouched in the living room scrubbing the base of the sofa, showing that she is now actively covering up the blood evidence.
