Chapter 49
Overview
Sydney's dinner with Tom briefly repairs their recent tension, but it also exposes a disturbing side of him when he casually kills a trapped mouse with a hammer. After Sydney tells him about Kevin's fake Zoom intrusion, Tom's intense anger underscores the continuing danger Kevin represents. The chapter ends on an emotionally mixed note as Tom reluctantly agrees to attend Gretchen and Randy's future wedding, giving Sydney hope that he may be willing to commit more fully.
Summary
Sydney says things have been tense with Tom after he canceled on her for his mother, so she ignored his follow-up texts for a while. When Tom invites her to his apartment for a candlelit homemade dinner, Sydney decides to forgive him and goes to see him. Tom greets her warmly in his fifth-floor walk-up, but the promised homemade meal turns out to be takeout from Luigi's because he worked late.
As Sydney goes into the kitchen for utensils, she spots a mouse stuck beside the refrigerator and panics. Tom explains that the glue trap he set finally worked, sends Sydney back to the other room, and deals with it himself. After hearing loud banging, Sydney learns Tom put the trapped mouse in a bag and smashed it with a hammer. Sydney is horrified both by the cruelty of the act and by how little remorse Tom shows, while Tom argues that killing the trapped mouse was practical and unavoidable.
They sit down to eat, and Sydney notices Tom's knives are unusually sharp, which makes her uneasy because of her bleeding problems. She then tells Tom about Kevin reaching her through a fake Zoom meeting. Tom reacts with intense anger, saying he should have called the police sooner and insisting Sydney should try harder to identify Kevin, even suggesting a private investigator or a hacker. Tom's reaction confirms how seriously he takes the threat, but his fury also adds to Sydney's sense of unease.
Later, Sydney tells Tom that Randy bought a ring and plans to propose to Gretchen. When Sydney mentions the future wedding, Tom responds awkwardly and resists talking about attending, which frustrates Sydney because she sees it as another sign that he avoids being integrated into her life. After Sydney pushes him, Tom admits he likes her very much and hints that there are parts of himself she cannot understand. Even so, Tom finally agrees to be Sydney's date whenever the wedding happens, and Sydney ends the evening feeling newly hopeful that their relationship might have a real future.
