Chapter 54
Overview
This flashback shows Slug overhearing enough of Tom’s exchange with Daisy to decide that Daisy may be another dangerous witness, just as Alison was. Tom tries to contain the situation and protect Daisy, but Slug makes clear he is willing to act violently if Tom does not. The chapter sharpens the link between Alison’s fate and Daisy’s new peril while exposing a growing rift between Tom and Slug.
Summary
In this flashback, Tom realizes Slug has been watching him and likely overheard part of Tom’s conversation with Daisy. Slug immediately comments on Daisy meeting Tom, and Tom studies Slug while thinking about their long history as childhood outcasts who became best friends because neither fit in anywhere else.
As Tom leaves the Driscolls’ backyard so he will not be caught there, Slug follows him. Slug points out that Daisy spoke to Alison, which confirms he heard enough to understand the danger. Tom insists the situation is under control and says he explained everything to Daisy.
Slug challenges that confidence by reminding Tom how Alison also accepted their explanation about the “hamburger meat in the trunk.” Slug then says Daisy is a problem, and Tom is shaken because Slug used the same language about Alison shortly before Alison was murdered. Tom tries to push back, arguing that Daisy is not a problem and that he will handle her himself.
Tom directly orders Slug to stay away from Daisy, hoping to protect her and prevent another disaster. Slug refuses to promise anything, saying he will not go to jail because Tom cannot do what “needs to be done.” Slug walks away, leaving Tom alone with the clear threat that Daisy may now be in danger and that Tom no longer controls Slug.
