Chapter 44
Overview
Sydney realizes Gretchen’s account of the museum exhibit contradicts the alibi Gretchen gave police for Randy on the night Bonnie was murdered. After confronting her, Sydney learns Gretchen lied to protect Randy, whose history includes a stalking accusation and an assault charge, making him far more suspicious than Sydney knew.
Although the revelation could reopen Randy as a serious suspect, Sydney decides not to tell Jake. The chapter raises the stakes by showing Sydney knowingly withholds potentially important information while fearing she may be protecting the wrong man.
Summary
While eating takeout alone, Sydney thinks about her strained last exchange with Tom, especially his evasiveness about his phone and his refusal to let her meet his mother. Sydney decides not to contact Tom and instead keeps replaying her earlier conversation with Gretchen, feeling that something about it does not fit.
Sydney then identifies the problem. Gretchen had said she was at the museum half the night before her exhibit opened, but Sydney remembers that this was the same night Bonnie was murdered. Sydney also remembers that Detective Jake had ruled out Randy Muncy because Gretchen claimed she had been with him all night, so Sydney realizes Gretchen’s story and Randy’s alibi cannot both be true.
Sydney calls Gretchen and directly asks where she really was the night Bonnie died. Gretchen first tries to correct her timeline, but when Sydney keeps pressing, Gretchen admits she was at the museum and lied to the police. Gretchen says she lied because Randy would have looked suspicious without an alibi: he is the super, he has keys to the building, and he has a past that includes a stalking accusation and an assault charge. Gretchen also admits that giving Randy an alibi was Randy’s idea, though she insists he did not force her.
When Sydney tells Gretchen she should go to the police, Gretchen begs her not to and insists Randy could never have murdered Bonnie. Gretchen says she loves Randy and wants a future with him, which leaves Sydney disturbed but uncertain. Sydney considers calling Jake, yet she remembers that Jake mentioned unidentified matching fingerprints at the crime scenes and reasons that Randy may already be excluded if his prints are on file.
In the end, Sydney agrees not to tell anyone. Gretchen becomes emotional and thanks Sydney repeatedly, even joking that Sydney could be maid of honor if she marries Randy. Sydney lets the conversation continue, but privately she cannot stop wondering whether keeping Gretchen’s secret is a terrible mistake.
