After leaving Tom, Sydney goes to Gretchen and Randy’s apartment and feels lighter, even though she is still unsettled. Sydney tells herself she made the right decision because, even if Tom is not a serial killer, he was never a good boyfriend. While Gretchen cooks dinner and shows photos from her museum exhibit, Sydney remembers that Gretchen’s work explains Gretchen’s alibi for the night Bonnie was killed, but it also means Randy was alone in Sydney’s building that night. Even so, Sydney keeps insisting to herself that Randy could not be Bonnie’s killer.

The apartment feels domestic and ordinary. Gretchen has allowed Randy to keep his ant farm, and Sydney notices how affectionate the couple is with each other. At dinner, Gretchen’s casserole turns out to be good, and Randy praises her warmly. The easy, loving mood makes Sydney feel both happy for her friends and sad about the collapse of her own relationship.

Then Randy abruptly gets down on one knee and proposes to Gretchen. Gretchen immediately accepts, thrilled by the proposal and unconcerned with how small the diamond is. The proposal confirms how serious and loving their relationship seems, and Sydney becomes emotional watching it. To avoid crying in front of them, Sydney excuses herself and goes to the bathroom.

In the bathroom, Sydney feels insecure about herself and reflects on Tom, wondering why he ever wanted to date her. After using the toilet, Sydney finds that it will not flush. Not wanting to interrupt Gretchen and Randy, Sydney decides to fix it herself, remembering that she already knows how to deal with the faulty toilets in the building.

When Sydney opens the toilet tank and frees the stuck lever, she notices a taped freezer bag hidden inside. Curious, Sydney pulls it out, expecting something odd but harmless. Instead, she finds multiple locks of long hair inside, each tied with a different-colored ribbon. The hidden collection reads to Sydney as a stash of trophies, and the discovery instantly convinces her that Randy is the killer.
