Chapter 32
Overview
Sydney's third date with Tom stays romantic until Tom discovers her real apartment building and reacts with unmistakable panic. His pointed questions about the building, Bonnie's murder, and the unidentified killer suggest he may have a deeper connection to Sydney's past than she realizes. After Sydney badly cuts her finger, Tom's calm, even energized response to her blood restores the mood, and he chooses intimacy over leaving.
Summary
Sydney and Tom enjoy a strong third date over poke bowls, and Sydney plans to bring Tom back to her apartment for tequila and sex. On the walk home, Sydney casually mentions that her ex Jake is a cop, which makes Tom tense, and Tom realizes that the building where he first protected Sydney from Kevin was only a fake address she used as a decoy.
When Sydney leads Tom to her real apartment building a few blocks away, Tom reacts with sudden shock. He stops outside, looks sick, and reluctantly lets Sydney bring him upstairs. In the elevator, Tom asks how long Sydney has lived there and whether she knows many people in the building, which strikes Sydney as strange.
Sydney then explains that Bonnie, her close friend in the building, was murdered there months earlier by a man police believe used a burner phone and then disappeared. Tom is visibly shaken and presses whether the police know who Bonnie's killer was. Sydney reassures Tom that the building is safe, but once they enter her apartment, Tom says he feels unwell and tries to leave by claiming he has an early staff meeting.
As Sydney prepares tequila, she becomes upset that Tom suddenly wants out and suspects she may never see him again after tonight. While cutting limes, Sydney slices her finger badly and starts bleeding heavily. Instead of getting squeamish, Tom quickly gets her first aid kit, becomes oddly animated by how well stocked it is, and efficiently bandages her wound.
Helping Sydney seems to calm Tom completely. His earlier panic disappears, and his attraction returns. Tom drops the excuse about his meeting, kisses Sydney, and tells her that all he wants is her, shifting the night back toward intimacy despite the disturbing reaction he had to her building and Bonnie's murder.
