Chapter 9
Overview
Kevin reappears outside the building and tries to pressure Sydney into speaking with him, but Sydney publicly names his behavior as an attack and Bonnie drives him off by threatening to call the police. The encounter confirms that Kevin remains a real threat rather than an isolated bad date.
Back at the apartment building, attention shifts to Randy, whose upcoming visit to Bonnie’s apartment exposes Bonnie’s distrust of him and Sydney’s own uneasy feelings. The chapter broadens Sydney’s sense of danger while keeping her focus on finding the man who saved her.
Summary
After coffee, Gretchen leaves to prepare for her museum exhibit, and Sydney walks home with Bonnie. As they near the spot where Kevin attacked Sydney the night before, Sydney sees Kevin waiting on the steps of the building where she had pretended to live. Kevin tries to speak to Sydney alone and insists the attack was a misunderstanding, but Sydney directly tells him he attacked her and orders him to leave.
When Kevin keeps pushing, Bonnie immediately backs Sydney up. Bonnie threatens to call 911 and describes Kevin as a harassing creep, forcing him to retreat. Before leaving, Kevin warns Sydney that she is making a mistake, which reminds Sydney how dangerous he was the previous night and deepens her fear that he could come after her again.
Once Kevin is gone, Sydney and Bonnie continue to their real building, where they find Randy changing lightbulbs in the lobby. Randy asks after Gretchen, flirts lightly about missing her, and agrees to come to Bonnie’s apartment the next morning to inspect her noisy toilet after finishing more urgent maintenance requests.
In the elevator, Bonnie privately asks Sydney to come over before Randy’s visit because Randy makes Bonnie uneasy. Sydney initially argues that Randy seems harmless and notes that he has always behaved respectfully with her, partly because Gretchen is dating him. Still, Sydney admits to herself that Randy sometimes watches her in a way that feels unsettling rather than flirtatious.
Sydney finally agrees to join Bonnie for coffee before Randy arrives. The chapter closes with Sydney reflecting on her small social routine and hoping Bonnie might also help her continue searching for the mysterious man who rescued her from Kevin.
