Sydney travels by taxi to Bonnie’s funeral in Brooklyn with Gretchen and Randy. The ride emphasizes how differently each of them is processing Bonnie’s death: Gretchen comes prepared to cry, Randy clumsily struggles to understand why Bonnie’s friends are grieving so intensely, and Sydney is already tense and emotionally raw.

Outside the church, Sydney finds Detective Jake Sousa waiting. Jake tells Sydney that no one has been arrested a week after the murder, and he admits he is attending the funeral partly in case Bonnie’s unidentified boyfriend appears, since killers sometimes show up at their victims’ funerals. Jake’s lack of progress makes Sydney feel both hopeless and frightened, especially because she trusts his skills and realizes that if Jake cannot solve the case, Bonnie’s killer may remain free.

Inside the church, Bonnie’s mother, Mrs. Griffin, approaches Sydney and asks whether Bonnie ever shared the identity of the man she had been seeing. When Sydney says she knows almost nothing, Mrs. Griffin breaks down and angrily accuses Sydney of not doing enough to help find Bonnie’s killer. The confrontation leaves Sydney shaken, but it also forces her to admit that Mrs. Griffin is right: if Bonnie had been in Sydney’s position, Bonnie would have pushed much harder for answers.

Sydney joins Gretchen and Randy near the front, still disturbed by the exchange and by thoughts of how permanent Bonnie’s loss is for her family. She also feels newly isolated, thinking about her failed dating life and her fear of using Cynch again. Then, when Sydney looks toward the back of the church expecting to see Jake, she instead sees Kevin at Bonnie’s funeral, a shocking sight that immediately raises the stakes and suspicion around Bonnie’s death.
