Chapter 55
Overview
Jake tells Sydney that Tom’s prints match evidence from Bonnie’s apartment and another murdered woman’s home, strongly confirming Sydney’s fear that Tom is tied to the killings. Even so, Jake warns that police still need to question Tom and formally obtain his prints before an arrest is likely. The chapter shifts Sydney from suspicion to near certainty while raising the immediate danger that Tom could remain free and come after her.
Summary
After Jake leaves, Sydney takes a quick shower but cannot settle down. Sydney knows she should work, yet anxiety makes that impossible, so Sydney spends the next few hours pacing her living room and waiting for news.
Jake finally calls and tells Sydney that the test is a match. The fingerprints connected to Tom match unidentified prints found in Bonnie’s apartment and in the apartment of another murdered woman. The result overwhelms Sydney, because the suspicion Sydney brought to Jake is now supported by evidence, and Sydney realizes how close Sydney may have come to becoming another victim.
Sydney asks whether police will arrest Tom immediately, but Jake explains that the water bottle Sydney handed over is not enough by itself. Police plan to bring Tom in for questioning and obtain his fingerprints directly, which could strengthen the case, although Jake warns that getting an arrest warrant may still be difficult. That uncertainty frightens Sydney, because if Tom is released, Tom may realize Sydney turned him in and may try to retaliate.
Jake confirms that a police car is still outside Sydney’s building and promises that, if necessary, Jake himself will watch over her. Sydney blames herself for trusting Tom, but Jake reassures Sydney that Tom fooled other people as well, including Jake. Jake reminds Sydney that Sydney’s discovery may be what finally brings Bonnie’s killer to justice, and the chapter ends with Sydney left to do nothing but wait for the next update.
