After escaping Kevin, Sydney walks the last few blocks home feeling shaken by the near assault but preoccupied by the stranger who intervened. Sydney replays the encounter, convinced they felt a spark, and wonders if Mystery Man avoided asking for her name only because he had just witnessed her being attacked. By the time Sydney reaches her building, she is miserable and assumes she will probably never see him again.

In the lobby mail room, Sydney runs into her neighbor and friend Bonnie, who has clearly been out on a date herself. When Sydney rates her own date as a disaster, Bonnie looks up and is horrified to realize Sydney is bleeding heavily from her forehead. Sydney checks her compact and discovers that hitting her head on the garbage can left a cut that has spread blood across her face.

The sight makes Sydney think not only about the attack but about her von Willebrand disease, which causes even minor cuts to bleed more than usual. Sydney recalls how the disorder embarrassed her as a child and teenager, and she immediately worries that Mystery Man may have been repelled by her bloody appearance. Sydney tries to clean herself up and downplays the injury to Bonnie.

To shift the conversation, Sydney asks about Bonnie’s night. Bonnie excitedly explains that an on-and-off casual partner, a hot doctor she has seen for a year, now says he wants to be exclusive and settle down. Sydney is skeptical because Bonnie has mostly been a booty call, but Sydney wishes her luck and confirms they will all go to yoga the next day with Gretchen. Sydney then rides the elevator to her apartment, reflects uneasily on her abruptly ended past live-in relationship, and feels newly vulnerable in the dim hallway before unlocking her door and stepping inside.
