Chapter 12
Overview
After Bonnie’s murder is discovered, Sydney is questioned at the crime scene by Detective Jake Sousa, her ex-boyfriend, who deliberately takes the case. Their interview identifies Bonnie’s secretive “doctor” boyfriend, who used a burner phone, as a major suspect, while also putting Kevin and briefly Randy on the investigators’ radar.
The chapter matters because it turns Bonnie’s death into an active investigation and reconnects Sydney with someone she both resents and trusts. Jake’s return introduces emotional complications, but it also gives Sydney confidence that Bonnie’s killer may actually be found.
Summary
Sydney sits in Bonnie Griffin’s apartment in shock while police process the homicide scene. Randy Muncy was the one who called 911 after he and Sydney found Bonnie dead in her bedroom, and Sydney cannot stop reliving the sight of Bonnie’s mutilated body. Officer Morales gently tells Sydney that a detective needs to question her, and Sydney agrees because she wants Bonnie’s killer caught.
The assigned detective turns out to be Jake Sousa, Sydney’s ex-boyfriend, whom she once lived with for a year. Jake admits he specifically asked for the case after recognizing Bonnie’s address from the time he forwarded Sydney’s mail there. Their reunion is tense and painful, but Jake puts that aside and tells Sydney he needs her help to find the person who murdered Bonnie.
Sydney recounts the morning’s events, from going downstairs to Bonnie’s apartment to meeting Randy at the door and discovering Bonnie’s body. Jake asks whether Bonnie had enemies or a romantic partner. Sydney explains that Bonnie used the Cynch app and had recently become exclusive with a man she believed was a doctor, but Sydney does not know his name. Jake reveals that police already checked Bonnie’s phone and found that the apparent boyfriend had been texting Bonnie from a burner phone, which makes him an immediate suspect.
Sydney then raises other possibilities. She mentions Randy because he has a key to Bonnie’s apartment, but Jake says Randy has an alibi because his girlfriend, Gretchen, was with him all night. Sydney also tells Jake about Kevin, the Cynch date who frightened her and returned the day before, when Bonnie defended Sydney. As Jake promises to investigate every lead, Sydney remembers that his total devotion to police work destroyed their relationship, yet she also realizes that his determination is exactly why she believes he can get justice for Bonnie.
