During dinner, Ada reveals anxiety about starting at the new school tomorrow. Millie tries to reassure Ada that everyone will be returning from spring break and likely won’t be focused on newcomers. Enzo offers to drive Ada in his truck, but Millie insists Ada is still too small to sit in the front seat.

Nico excitedly asks to take the school bus, and Ada decides to ride the bus with him instead of going with Enzo, showing how protective she is of her younger brother. Millie notices Ada barely eats and seems to be coping with her nerves by moving noodles around her plate.

Nico then asks for a pet, pushing Millie on a promise she once made. A dog is ruled out until the yard is fenced, and Millie rejects Ada’s suggestion of a turtle. Nico announces he wants a praying mantis, and Enzo supports the idea, arguing it would be easy to care for.

Millie resists, especially when Nico explains the plan involves buying an egg that could hatch hundreds of mantises and raising “flightless” flies as food, though Enzo claims most mantises will eat each other until only one or two remain. Despite her disgust and dread—imagining what their neat neighbor Suzette would think—Millie reluctantly agrees to let it happen.
