Chapter 46
Overview
Before Millie and Enzo head to the police station, Millie sends Ada and Nico to school and walks them to the bus stop, where Janice Archer pointedly keeps her distance. Janice reveals Spencer is forbidden to play with Nico because of Nico’s past suspension, exposing that Nico has likely been lying about where he has been going. The discovery deepens Millie’s fear that trouble is not only coming from the police, but also from her own son’s hidden behavior.
Summary
With Detective Willard summoning Millie and Enzo to the police station, Millie decides she has no choice but to send Ada and Nico to school rather than keep them home. Both children are unusually quiet at breakfast, reflecting the fear and uncertainty hanging over the household.
Millie walks the children to the bus stop for the first time in a while, wanting to make sure everything goes smoothly. Janice Archer and her son, Spencer, are already there, and Millie holds back her anger over Janice’s insinuations to the police about Enzo. The adults avoid speaking as they wait.
Nico, suddenly calling Millie “Mommy,” begs not to go to school and asks to go with Millie instead, but Millie refuses and promises she will be home after school. Trying to comfort himself, Nico asks if he can play with Spencer, and Spencer eagerly agrees.
Janice immediately shuts it down, saying Spencer is never allowed to spend time with Nico because Nico was suspended for fighting. Millie realizes Nico has been lying about playing at the Archers’ house and pulls him aside to demand where he has really been going when he leaves home.
Nico insists he has been “nowhere,” then claims he has only been on the street alone and lied so Millie would not worry. Before Millie can press further, the school bus arrives, and Nico rushes aboard, leaving Millie watching it depart while she worries about the secrets Nico may be hiding.
