Chapter 59
Overview
Enzo confesses to Millie and Cecelia that he killed Jonathan Lowell and is immediately arrested by Detective Willard. Cecelia doubts Enzo’s stated motive and heads to the station, while Millie realizes her family’s life and finances are collapsing without him. Upstairs, Ada reveals the confession may be a lie: Ada claims Ada killed Jonathan.
Summary
Enzo tells Millie and Cecelia that he killed Jonathan Lowell, apologizing for lying and insisting he will “make it right” by confessing. He claims he did it for insurance money because the family was broke, leaving Millie stunned and scrambling for answers as the doorbell rings.
Millie rushes the children, Ada and Nico, upstairs so they won’t see what’s coming. Enzo opens the door to Detective Willard, who arrests Enzo for Jonathan’s murder and handcuffs him. As Enzo is led away, he only calls out that he loves Millie, while Cecelia shouts instructions that Enzo must not speak without her present.
After the police car leaves, Cecelia reels but insists something doesn’t add up, saying she doesn’t believe Enzo would kill for money and suspecting he has another motive. Millie, horrified by the brutality of the throat-slashing and reminded of Enzo’s violent past, can’t reconcile the confession with the man she knows. Cecelia goes to the station, promising Millie she will help.
Left alone, Millie confronts the practical fallout: without Enzo, she likely can’t afford the mortgage and may have to sell the house. She goes upstairs to talk to the children and finds Ada sobbing uncontrollably, devastated by what she saw and what she believes is happening.
Ada insists the police are wrong and that Enzo didn’t kill Mr. Lowell. When Millie says Enzo confessed, Ada doubles down—then delivers a shocking reversal, telling Millie that Ada was the one who killed Jonathan Lowell.
