Chapter 52
Overview
Millie sneaks into the Lowells’ backyard at night to verify Enzo’s claim that the property can be accessed without going through the police-taped front, hoping to undermine the case against him. While searching the meticulously landscaped yard, Millie’s doubts about Enzo flare as she considers a possible conspiracy with Suzette for insurance money. The chapter ends on a sharp escalation when Millie hears movement in the bushes and realizes an intruder is present.
Summary
Late at night, after the children and Enzo appear to be asleep, Millie quietly slips outside with a flashlight and heads into the Lowells’ backyard. She stays in pajamas and slippers because she plans to be gone only briefly.
She notes that 12 Locust is still cordoned off with police tape and dark inside, and that Suzette is clearly staying elsewhere after Jonathan’s bloody death. Reporters have finally dispersed, and Millie has taken a couple days off work. Millie is determined to confirm Enzo’s claim that someone could access the Lowells’ backyard without approaching the front of the house, because proving that possibility would mean Enzo isn’t the only plausible suspect.
In the backyard, Millie takes in how much larger it is than her own and how meticulously Enzo has trimmed the shrubs and arranged the landscaping, including an area Suzette intended for a garden. Millie’s thoughts spiral into doubt as she considers the detective’s implication that Enzo and Suzette could have conspired to kill Jonathan for life insurance money, then rejects it, trying to reconcile Enzo’s financial stress and his admitted history of violence with her belief that he would not murder.
As Millie reaches the far end of the yard, she hears leaves rustling and sees branches shifting. The sound jolts her into realizing that if someone entered from the back to kill Jonathan, they could still have access—and Millie is alone and unarmed. Millie whispers a cautious greeting, debates fleeing back to her own yard, and then recognizes she has hesitated too long: the intruder is already there.
