Chapter 11
Overview
Millie takes Nico to a playdate at Janice’s house, hoping to help him settle in, but Janice’s rigid rules and intrusive questions make the visit tense. Over foul green “juice,” Janice drops a disturbing hint that Millie’s house was avoided by buyers because of “something on the inside.” Janice then reveals Enzo is currently at Suzette Lowell’s house, deliberately stirring Millie’s insecurity and feeding her growing sense that something is wrong on Locust Street.
Summary
Millie prepares for Nico’s first neighborhood playdate with Spencer at 13 Locust, relieved to have an activity that might burn off Nico’s restless energy. Nico begs to bring his new baby praying mantis, Little Kiwi, but Millie refuses and allows him to bring a baseball instead. Ada declines to come along, and Enzo is absent, likely working.
At Spencer’s house, Janice greets Millie stiffly and immediately enforces strict rules, ordering them to remove their shoes and watching Nico’s muddy sneakers and socks with alarm. Nico and Spencer rush outside to play while Janice hovers anxiously, fixated on safety and cleanliness.
Janice’s small talk turns invasive as she grills Millie about checking Nico for lice, pushing for specifics about combs and certainty. When Millie tries to leave, Janice unexpectedly asks her to stay, and Millie agrees, sensing Janice’s loneliness and hoping for a better neighborly relationship.
In Janice’s immaculate kitchen, Janice serves thick, grainy green “juice” that Millie finds nearly impossible to swallow. Their conversation shifts to Millie’s new house, and Janice bluntly claims Millie got a good price because “nobody else wanted it,” adding that a prior bidder withdrew and implying the problem must be “something on the inside.” The comment reignites Millie’s anxiety about the house and the strange scraping noise she has heard.
Janice then pivots to gossip about Suzette and Jonathan Lowell, insisting Suzette is cruel to her husband. Watching 12 Locust from her kitchen window, Janice reveals that Enzo went into Suzette’s house about an hour earlier and is still there, needling Millie about trust. Millie insists she trusts Enzo, but privately steels herself with a dark certainty that he should be afraid to betray her.
