Chapter 78
Overview
Millie and Detective Ramirez confront Suzette Lowell at her hotel and force her to face what the police found in the concealed room at her house, including Braden Lundie’s blood and Suzette’s fingerprints. Under pressure, Suzette admits she knew after the fact and covered up Jonathan Lowell’s crimes to protect her own life and reputation.
Millie and Ramirez offer Suzette a deal: confess to killing Jonathan and explain the fingerprints and the knife evidence, or risk prosecution for Braden’s death while Enzo remains framed. With Detective Willard en route, Millie and Ramirez leave, betting Suzette will choose confession to save herself and free Enzo.
Summary
Detective Ramirez drives Millie to a luxurious hotel where Suzette Lowell is staying. At the concierge desk, Ramirez identifies himself as NYPD and is quickly granted access to Suzette’s room. Millie pushes to confront Suzette immediately, hoping it is the best chance to protect her family and get Enzo cleared.
Suzette opens the door in a bathrobe and tries to maintain control, demanding Ramirez’s ID before letting them in. Ramirez needles her about her house and then reveals that police discovered the concealed room beneath the stairwell. Suzette’s composure falters when Ramirez mentions the hidden room and directly challenges her denial by pointing out her fingerprints are “all over” it.
Ramirez escalates by stating the police found blood and DNA belonging to Braden Lundie, a boy who disappeared three years earlier, and warns that officers are digging in Suzette’s backyard. Millie explodes in anger, accusing Suzette of being an accessory who knowingly protected a child murderer and still allowed Millie’s child into the home. Suzette breaks down crying and admits she learned about Braden only after the fact, but concedes she did not report Jonathan Lowell because she believed it was “too late.”
Suzette attempts to justify staying with Jonathan by claiming she remained to watch him and prevent future harm, while also admitting she feared the personal consequences of being tied to a child murderer. Millie and Ramirez then present Suzette with a choice: confess to Jonathan’s murder—claiming she killed him after discovering the secret room, explaining her fingerprints, and framing it as self-defense—or let Enzo take the fall while the police prosecute Suzette for involvement in Braden’s death. Ramirez also offers a story to explain the blood on Enzo’s knife: that Suzette used it to kill Jonathan and then returned it to Enzo to dispose of evidence.
Suzette asks for time and requests privacy to get dressed as Ramirez notes Detective Willard is arriving soon. Millie and Ramirez leave quickly to avoid being caught undermining the official process. Outside the room, Ramirez promises he will use his influence to make the plan work and free Enzo, and he predicts Suzette will confess because she fears the more devastating charges tied to Braden.
