Chapter 9
Overview
Millie confronts Enzo about accepting work for Suzette, convinced Suzette is flirting with him and trying to manipulate their household. Enzo reassures Millie of his loyalty, while Millie’s inner thoughts reveal unease about the darker parts of both their pasts—especially Enzo’s life before her. A disturbing scraping sound inside the house briefly interrupts them, hinting that something may be wrong at 11 Locust Street.
Summary
Back home from Suzette Lowell’s dinner party, Millie Accardi stays silent and angry, shoving the uneaten apple pie into the refrigerator and retreating to bed after saying good night to Ada and Nico.
Enzo joins Millie and tries to lighten the mood, but Millie finally admits what is bothering her: Enzo agreeing to do landscaping work in Suzette’s backyard. Millie insists Suzette was flirting aggressively all night and suspects Suzette has an agenda.
Enzo jokes about the idea of being tempted, then reassures Millie that he would never look at another woman and that he loves his wife and family. He also teases that he is “scared” of Millie, implying Millie’s capacity for payback.
Millie privately reflects that both she and Enzo have done terrible things, and that Enzo’s past overseas may hide violence she does not fully understand; when she once asked if he had killed anyone, he dodged the question.
As Enzo touches and kisses Millie, Millie notices an unsettling scraping sound coming from somewhere inside the house, like nails on a chalkboard. The noise stops when they listen for it, and Enzo dismisses it as the house “settling,” urging Millie to move on as intimacy resumes.
