Chapter 20
Overview
After a chaotic day at the hospital, Millie arrives home late and expects to find Enzo and the kids there because Enzo’s truck is outside. Instead, the house is unnaturally silent, and her search turns up empty rooms and no response to her calls. The chapter ends with Millie realizing Enzo, Ada, and Nico are all missing despite signs they should be home.
Summary
Millie runs late at the hospital after a planned discharge falls apart when an elderly patient’s daughter refuses to take her home. Millie spends the afternoon calling other relatives and trying to arrange rehab care, but insurance problems block the option, leaving Millie worried about what will happen to the patient.
Near six o’clock, Millie pulls into her garage and notices Enzo’s truck parked outside, which reassures her at first that he should be home with Ada and Nico. Remembering Janice’s overprotective opinions about the kids, Millie is still uneasy about them being alone for long.
Inside, the house is strangely silent. Millie calls out, gets no answer, and searches the first floor and kitchen, finding everything unchanged from the morning.
Millie checks the backyard and finds nobody there. She then goes upstairs, finding the master bedroom empty and Ada’s room immaculate but vacant, with her books and trophies in place.
Millie finally enters Nico’s messy room and sees his praying mantis, Kiwi, still in its enclosure, but Nico is gone too. With Enzo’s truck outside and the house empty, Millie is left panicked, unable to find Enzo or either child.
