Chapter 45
Overview
Detective Willard summons Millie and Enzo to the station for an official interview about Jonathan Lowell’s murder, raising the stakes as their words will be recorded. Millie calls NYPD detective Benito Ramirez for guidance, and he advises them to cooperate cautiously and demand a lawyer if the questioning turns adversarial. After Millie reveals Enzo had blood on his hands the night of the murder, Ramirez urges her to keep that detail from Willard.
Summary
Millie and Enzo wake to Enzo’s phone ringing. Detective Willard asks both of them to come to the station to talk after they get the kids to school, and the request immediately alarms Millie because it means their statements will be on the record.
Millie urges Enzo to call Benito Ramirez, their NYPD detective friend who once helped clear Millie’s name and is Ada’s godfather. Ramirez answers right away and jokingly assumes Millie must be in trouble, until Millie explains that their neighbor Jonathan Lowell was found murdered and that Willard wants to question them.
Ramirez says the police likely have to interview them because of proximity, and advises them to go in and answer questions only as long as things stay straightforward. If anything feels off, Ramirez tells Millie and Enzo to stop talking immediately and ask for a lawyer, noting they must be provided one if necessary.
Before Enzo gets into the shower, Millie asks whether Ramirez is still working; he admits he never actually retired and promises to ask around. Once Enzo is out of earshot, Millie confesses to Ramirez that Enzo came home with blood all over his hands and claimed it was from a cut.
Ramirez doesn’t dismiss Millie’s fear, but insists Enzo is a good man and wouldn’t kill without a compelling reason. He warns Millie not to overreact and, crucially, tells her not to mention the blood on Enzo’s hands to Detective Willard.
