Chapter 48
Overview
After hours of interrogation, Enzo finally tells Millie the motel story Detective Willard used against him is being misconstrued. Enzo admits he checked into a motel, but says it was to help Martha, their abused cleaning woman, not to meet Suzette.
Enzo explains Martha was stealing to fund an escape from her violent husband and that Enzo bought the illegal gun to protect her as she fled. Millie believes Enzo and reframes key “evidence,” but her trust is still uneasy because she senses he is withholding more.
Summary
Millie is released from questioning, but Enzo is kept at the station for hours. Millie waits, assuming detectives are trying to exhaust Enzo into confessing. When Enzo finally comes out, he looks sick and drained and insists they leave immediately.
On the drive home, Enzo asks Millie to believe he did not cheat with Suzette. Millie presses him with what Detective Willard said and with the fact that Millie smelled Suzette’s perfume on Enzo. Enzo initially denies the motel claim, then admits he did check into a motel—but says it was not with Suzette, and police only assumed it was.
Enzo reveals the woman was Martha, their cleaning woman, and explains the perfume: Suzette had leftover perfume that Martha used or took. Enzo says he went to Martha’s house to deliver her last paycheck and found her covered in bruises. Enzo believes Martha’s husband was abusing her, taking her money, and that Martha had been stealing small items to save enough to escape.
Enzo adds that Martha wanted to speak to Millie because Martha “knew about” Millie and hoped for help, but Martha lost her nerve after Millie accused her of breaking things and stealing. Enzo says Suzette confronted him about suspected theft, and Enzo tried to protect Martha from losing her job by convincing Suzette there was no stealing.
Millie asks if the illegal gun was for Martha, and Enzo confirms it was meant to protect Martha while Enzo helped her flee and after she left, because Enzo feared Martha’s husband would come after her. Millie is angry Enzo kept this from her, but ultimately believes his explanation; even so, she can’t shake the feeling Enzo is still hiding something.
